The winter and spring were especially wet, allowing the vines to build reserves so that they did not stress throughout the summer as they usually do in California. Fluctuating temperatures over April, May and June, however, led to small yields. The weather from June to September was beautiful without extreme heat spikes. Consequently, the wines display a rare equilibrium.

The wines have received a warm critical welcome. Indeed, we are very encouraged to observe so many properties, of all sizes and from all appellations, placing environmental protection at the top of their priorities.

Château Bélair-Monange was selected to participate in this edition. Edouard and Kelley Moueix had the pleasure of receiving the editor in chief, Orianne Nouailhac, and the photographer Leif Carlsson, who captured this beautiful field of mustard planted in a fallow parcel.

The article presents the approach at Bélair-Monange “One doesn’t transform such a landscape, one accompanies it, one lives it, one listens to it, feeds it, serves it.” Edouard Moueix is quoted, “Our family lives in the château, our children play in the vines, our teams live in the houses on the plateau. This soil has not seen herbicides since we have been responsible for its care. The earth is tilled, the parcels enjoy long fallow periods with cover crops that act as natural fertilizers: mustard, barley, oat, birdsfoot trefoil, faba bean… We don’t plan the steep areas so that they may welcome natural reserves of flora and fauna. Our stone walls are preserved, they welcome rabbits whereas bats abound in our quarries.”

Discover the entire article here or in kiosks until the end of the summer.

Thu, 25 Aug 2022 12:57:01 +0000 sandifer@jpmoueix.com 97 at https://www.moueix.com Le millésime 2021: Retour sur la Presse https://www.moueix.com/Pressemillesime2021 The 2021 Vintage : a look at press coverage

Image

Vendangeuse à Bélair-Monange - Benjamin Duvignac

sandifer@jpmou… Fri, 07/22/2022 - 09:50

Starting in mid-April this year, we presented the 2021 vintage "en primeur" to journalists who had travelled from all over the world. Two main factors led to the small yields: first, a difficult flowering that resulted in an uneven fruit set, followed by a hot and dry summer that led to optimal concentration of the berries.

A few numbers to illustrate this phenomenon:

Average number of berries per cluster of Merlot: 120 (instead of 200 on average)

Average weight of a berry: 1.2 gram (instead of 1.5 on average)

The wines are excellent, very seductive in their youth, with supple tannins.

Espérance de Trotanoy, a confidential cuvée only produced in the best vintages since 2009, comes mainly from the gravelly parcels located in the north-east part of the Trotanoy vineyard.

In 2019, Espérance presents a brilliant ruby robe. The nose expresses aromas of cherry, forest berries and a hint of spice. On the palate, the wine is open and vibrant unfolding with smooth, silky tannins. The savory finish is remarkably long, characteristic of this exceptional vintage.

Annonce de Bélair-Monange is produced since the 2014 vintage. More than ‘just’ a second wine, Annonce enjoys a unique approach tailored to express the complexity and the elegance of the site with a structure that is less tightly-wound, meaning the wine can be enjoyed a little bit earlier than the Grand Vin. The cuvée is the fruit of a specific vision and selection and can be considered in its own right.

In 2019, Annonce presents a radiant ruby red robe and, on the nose, aromas of red fruit and chalk, reflective of its terroir. On the palate the wine presents a beautiful balance between juicy fruit and an impression of salinity typical of the limestone plateau. The long finish unfolds over pronounced fruit and spices notes.

For James Suckling, “A firm, very polished and refined red with dark-berry, chocolate and vine-bark character. Hints of bitter burnt lemon, too. Full-bodied with redcurrant, mineral and salty undertones. Lightly dusty tannins and a flavorful finish. Reserved still, with good reason. Second wine of Belair-Monange. Try after 2026. » (95 pts, Janvier 2022)

Fri, 25 Mar 2022 10:17:13 +0000 sandifer@jpmoueix.com 94 at https://www.moueix.com James Suckling 2021 : Top 100 vins de France et du monde https://www.moueix.com/actualites/Sucklingtop1002021 James Suckling 2021 : Top 100 wines of France and the World

Image

sandifer@jpmou… Wed, 12/01/2021 - 15:53

Last week James Suckling published his annual lists for the Top 100 Wines of the world and of France.
